The Greenbelt consists of 720,000 hectares of farmland, rural communities, forests, wetlands, quarries, lakes, and rivers that is permanently protected from certain kinds of development under provincial legislation. The Greenbelt Plan includes lands previously protected by the Niagara Escarpment Plan and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan. The information layer indicates the extent of the Greenbelt Area as defined by Ontario Regulation 59/05, under the Greenbelt Act, 2005.
