Neptis Foundation appoints Marcy L. Burchfield as Executive Director

Martha Shuttleworth, president and founder of the Neptis Foundation, is pleased to announce that Marcy L. Burchfield has been appointed as the Foundation's new Executive Director, effective January 21, 2014.

Marcy joined Neptis in 2001 as a Research Associate to advance Neptis's research program through the use of mapping as an analytical and communications tool. She became Geomatics Research Program Manager in 2006 and Director of Research Programming and Communications in 2013. During her time at Neptis, she has overseen a growing program of geomatics analysis and publication, including the development of the online mapping application, the Neptis Geoweb, due to be launched in early 2014.

Following the death of Neptis's founding Executive Director, Tony Coombes, in June 2013, Marcy stepped in to ensure the continuation of the research program. Under her leadership, the Foundation completed and published two well-regarded reports in fall 2013: Implementing the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, and Review of Metrolinx's Big Move, both of which were initiated by Tony.

As part of her work with the Neptis Foundation, Marcy has published Growing Cities: comparing urban growth patterns and regional growth policies in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver (with Zack Taylor, April 2010), and Implementing Residential Intensification Targets: Lessons from research on intensification rates (February 2010).

Marcy Burchfield holds a master's of science degree in geography from the University of Toronto, and bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She has worked as a research associate at the University of Toronto. Before coming to Neptis, she held positions as a geomatics consultant with the City of Chicago, Emergency Measures Ontario, the City of Toronto.
