The Neptis Foundation and the Toronto Region Board of Trade are pleased to jointly present David Quarmby, Designer and Former Board Member of Transport for London (TfL) for a talk in Toronto on Wednesday, 9 April 2014.
Fifteen years ago Quarmby, on behalf of the British government, led the design of the governance and organisation of Transport for London (TfL) - the agency responsible for nearly all transportation planning and oversight of operations in Greater London, under the policy control of the Mayor.
Ten years after the formation of TfL, Greater London has seen a spectacular transformation in the how people move around the region-- growth of 75 per cent in bus use, 35-40 per cent in commuter rail travel and underground travel and a decline of 10 per cent in auto use - not to mention record high levels of transit service performance and traveller satisfaction.
In his talk, Quarmby will discuss how the Greater London Area has built a regional transit network, increased transit ridership, decreased automobile use and driven up traveller satisfaction.
His talk will focus on issues such as:
- The importance of a governance model that provides effective leadership and improved delivery of service
- How low-cost and high value solutions such as integrated ticketing, real-time information and "whole journey" planning increase customer satisfaction and ridership
- The role of arms' length contracting of transit operations, both public and private
