Express Rail
Express rail consists of regular rail lines for high-speed trains serving the region as a whole with two-way, all-day service or with peak period service only.
Regional Rail (full-day, 2-way service)
These lines carry diesel-electric or electric trains serving 5,000 to 20,000 persons per hour in both directions.
Regional Rail (peak)
These lines carry diesel-electric or electric trains serving 5,000 to 20,000 persons per hour in the peak direction.
Other Rapid Transit (LRT/BRT/AGT)
Light Rail Transit (LRT) consists of streetcar-like trains (up to three or four cars per train) operating on a protected right-of-way beside or within a roadway or railway, with a typical capacity of 2,000 to 10,000 passengers per hour in the peak direction.
Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is similar to light rail transit, but using advanced bus technology. Also includes buses operating in mixed traffic on controlled-access expressways that employ congestion management such as tolls, allowing the buses to maintain high average speeds. The capacity of BRT is typically 2,000 to 10,000 passengers per hour, peak direction.
Automated Guided Transit (AGT) is a type of rapid transit that operates in a corridor that is completely separated from other forms of transportation, allowing for fully automated vehicles. The capacity of AGT is typically 10,000 to 25,000 passengers per hour, peak direction.
BRT on Controlled-Access Expressway in Mixed Traffic with Congestion Management
This form of Bus Rapid Transit operates on expressways subject to congestion management such as tolls, allowing the buses to maintain high average speeds.
Possible Regional Rail Beyond the GTHA
The lines represent possible regional rail extensions to Cambridge, Peterborough, and Niagara. These routes are currently under study.
